CEP 810: Teaching for Understanding with Technology
Leigh Graves Wolf & Candace Marcotte This course was an introductory class to teaching with technology. Most importantly this class focused on what understanding means and the difference from memorizing or simply learning. In this course we learned about the Technology, Pedagogy and Content Knowledge theory (TPACK). Throughout this course we had to pick a new skill to learn. We were only able to use technology and the internet to learn this new skill. I focused on learning sign language. It was eye opening how many resources are available online. While learning sign language, I found that YouTube was the best help. I was able to learn by watching others and hearing them explain. I was also able to pause or re-watch sections of the videos. |
CEP 811: Adapting Innovative Technologies in Education
Leigh Graves Wolf , Amy Pietrowski & William Marsland This course applied what we learned in CEP 810 about TPACK in our professional setting. I worked with a group to create a conference proposal on the benefits of a flipped classroom. Not only did I learn more about a flipped classroom through this project, but I also learned how to write a conference proposal. This course pushed us to become 'makers' and to make new things our of recycled materials and innovative educational technologies. We also explored what it means to have a 21st century classroom and created our dream classrooms. I was able to take ideas from designing and learning about this type of classroom and apply them to my own classroom. |

CEP 800: Learning in School and other
Settings Danah Henriksen This course focused on major physiological perspectives for learning in school and outside of school. This course made a lot of connections to my own classroom. We also discussed how we can (and should) change our teaching styles to improve student learning. We were able to apply this to our classroom and share our experience of changing our teaching styles to help our students. This was the first course that I created a lesson plan using TPACK to use in my classroom. It was a new way of planning lessons for me and I was able to reflect on how the lesson went for my students. |
CEP 812: Applying Educational Technology to Issues of Practice
Emily Stone & Michelle Schira Hagerman During this course I learned how to incorporate technology into my curriculum to enhance it, as opposed to adding technology just to add it. This course included a group project that focused on a "Wicked Problem" facing teachers today. Our topic was reimagining online learning. Through our collaboration we researched what needed to be done to keep students engaged. This project opened my eyes to the importance of student engagement and how online learning can help students learn. During this course I was also able to survey my colleagues about technologies they use in the classroom. This opened my eyes to other possibilities for my classroom and made it clear that many teachers wanted to have more professional development in technology. |
Spring 2014
CEP 805: Learning Mathematics with Technology
Ralph Putnam & Eryn Stehr This was an elective course I took that focused on technology in the math classroom. I teach multiple different math courses, so I was looking forward to this course. Throughout the semester we examined different technologies available to increase student learning, and engagement, as well as enhancing the curriculum. Our final project for this course was an online resource library of math tools to use in our classrooms. This classroom focused a lot of collaboration through online discussion with classmates teaching similar content areas. This class has allowed me to include a lot more technology into my math classrooms. |
TE 846: Accommodating Differences in Literacy Learners
Dongbo Zhang This was another elective course I took to fulfill the literacy credit required to gain a professional teaching certificate for the state of Michigan. Throughout the course we learned about literacy strategies. There was a lot of collaboration and communication through online discussions and video chats. In this course I created a case study that followed two freshmen students through literacy learning. The focus of my case study was reading for information and summarizing the reading. The case study included background information (personal and academic), assessments (pre and post), lesson plans, and a reflection on the study and the experience. |

CEP 815: Technology and Leadership
Leigh Graves Wolf & Ben Gleason This course pushed us to become technology leaders in our work settings by combining what we have learned about technology, students learning and teaching. We also discussed the difference between instrumental thinking and missional thinking. This is one thing that I know I will use over and over again in my profession. Throughout all my courses in my MAET program, I have found a passion for flipped classrooms. Through this course, I was able to create a plan to present to administration in my district about flipped classrooms and what we would need to successfully have flipped classrooms in our math classes. |
CEP 820: Teaching Students Online
Leigh Graves Wolf, Anne Heintz, & Sandra Sawaya We looked at different types of learning management systems, finding which one would work best in our classroom. I created an online course using Haiku Learning for my Algebra course. My goal was to create a flipped classroom and to have all my lectures online. I have been using this online classroom with my students and I have noticed the positive impact it has had on their motivation and learning. Like other courses, collaboration was important in this course, but instead of with our peers it was with our instructors. They provided constant feedback while we created our online courses helping us along the way. |

CEP 822: Approaches to Educational Research
Leigh Graves Wolf & Ben Gleason The focus of this course is on educational research. The main aspect of this course was a research project we created. I focused my DreamIT project on teaching student organizational and study skills. While completing our own educational research, we read a lot about how to determine what makes research valid and useful. |
CEP 807: Capstone in Educational Technology
Matt Koehler, Spencer Greenhalgh, Brittany Dillman & Sarah Keenan This is my final course in my Master's program. In this course I created my online portfolio that you are currently viewing. This portfolio is a summary of everything I have created and learned in the MAET program. This course provided time for me to reflect on my courses and comprise everything I have learned. |
